Deciding one LPA or both before you start
It is worth settling this before you open the form, since it changes how many questions you answer today. - The donor's full name, date of birth and address
- Full names, addresses and dates of birth for each attorney
- Any replacement attorney's details
- Who will be the certificate provider, and how they qualify
- Anyone you want named as a person to notify (optional)
- A decision on whether you want one LPA or both
You do not need bank details, valuations or property deeds. An LPA appoints people; it does not list assets.

One thing cannot be done today
LPAs must be signed by hand with witnesses. There is no electronic signing route in England and Wales, for any provider.

What genuinely cannot happen today, whoever you use
- Signing — the donor, certificate provider and attorneys must each sign in wet ink, in the correct order, which usually means coordinating diaries rather than doing it in one sitting online
- The statutory four-week notice period, which only starts once the donor has signed
- OPG registration, which takes several weeks on top of that notice period
This is the same for every provider, not a limitation specific to us: GOV.UK's own free service, ours, and a solicitor's paper-based process all stop at the same point, because the law requires wet-ink signatures and a statutory waiting period regardless of how the document was prepared. Anyone claiming to register an LPA the same day is describing something the law does not allow.
A worked example of what 'today' really covers
Fatima decides on a Tuesday evening to make an LP1H for her husband. She chooses her LPA, answers the questions over about forty minutes, reviews the draft, pays £49 and downloads the document and signing guide, all before 9pm the same day. What she cannot do that evening is get her husband, his sister as certificate provider, and their two adult children as attorneys all in the same room with witnesses — that takes until the following Sunday to arrange. Common questions
Can I finish it later if I run out of time?
Yes. Your progress is saved to your account and you can return whenever you like.
Can I do both LPAs in one sitting?
Yes, and it is quicker, because most of the answers carry across.
If I finish today, when could the LPA actually be used?
Only once registered, which typically takes around 8-10 weeks after posting the signed forms, including the statutory notice period.
Why can't the document be signed electronically to finish everything today?
The law requires an LPA to be signed by hand, by each party in the correct order, with independent witnesses. No provider in England and Wales can offer electronic signing for an LPA.
If I have no certificate provider lined up yet, is there any point starting today?
Yes. You can still complete and pay for the document today; finding an eligible certificate provider is the only thing that then needs to happen before signing can go ahead.
