What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you — the donor — appoint people you trust, called attorneys, to make certain decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them yourself. There are two types of LPA in England and Wales, and you can make one or both.
Property & Financial Affairs LPA (LP1F)
Covers bank accounts, bills, pensions, benefits, investments, and buying or selling property. It can be used as soon as it is registered if you give permission, or only when you lose the ability to make those decisions yourself.
Health & Welfare LPA (LP1H)
Covers daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and — if you choose to give that power — decisions about life-sustaining treatment. It can only be used once you are no longer able to make those decisions yourself.

Who can make an LPA?
You can make an LPA if you are 18 or over, live in England or Wales, and have the mental capacity to understand the decision you are making — that is, what powers you are giving, who you are giving them to, and that your attorneys could make those decisions instead of you.
Being forgetful, or having a diagnosis such as early dementia, does not by itself mean you cannot make an LPA. Capacity is judged at the time the document is signed. If capacity has already been lost, an LPA is no longer possible and the route is a deputyship application to the Court of Protection instead.
Who can be an attorney?
An attorney must be 18 or over. For a Property & Financial Affairs LPA they must also not be bankrupt or subject to a debt relief order. Most people appoint a spouse or partner, adult children, another relative or a close friend, and many appoint more than one attorney together.
You choose how your attorneys act: jointly, meaning they must all agree on every decision, or jointly and severally, meaning any one of them can act alone. You can also name replacement attorneys in case one of your original choices can no longer act.
Do I need both LPAs?
The two LPAs cover completely different ground. A Property & Financial Affairs LPA does not let an attorney make care or medical decisions, and a Health & Welfare LPA does not let them touch your bank account. Most people make both so nothing is left uncovered.
You do not have to do both at once. Many people start with the Property & Financial Affairs LPA, then add Health & Welfare later — although making both together at £79 for one person is cheaper than making them separately.
How much does an LPA cost?
There are two separate costs, and we always show them separately. Our fee is £49 for one LPA or £79 for both LPA types for one person, paid once. The Office of the Public Guardian then charges its own registration fee, which you pay directly to them.
Registration fee is separate
OPG currently charges £92 to register each LPA, so £184 if you register both. You pay this directly to the Office of the Public Guardian, not to us. Fee reductions or exemptions may be available if you are on a low income or receive certain benefits. See the fees.
A solicitor typically charges several hundred pounds per LPA for the same documents. Our fee is fixed, there are no hourly charges, and you can see the full breakdown before you pay.
Common questions
Are you solicitors?
No. LPAs Online is an independent document preparation service. We do not provide legal advice and we are not affiliated with the Office of the Public Guardian or GOV.UK. Our checks are automated checks for common completion errors, not a legal review.
Do I need a solicitor to make an LPA?
No. Most people can make an LPA without one. A solicitor is worth considering where circumstances are complicated — a business, a dispute in the family, or bespoke restrictions.
How long does it take?
Most people finish the questions in one sitting. Everything is saved as you go, so you can stop and come back whenever suits you.
Do I need both LPAs?
Many people make both — one covers money and property, the other covers health and care. You can start with one and make the other later, although both together for one person is £79 rather than £98.
What happens after I pay?
You go straight into your questions. When you finish we prepare your forms, run our automated checks and give you your documents and a personalised signing guide to download.

Are registration fees included?
No. The Office of the Public Guardian charges its own registration fee for each LPA, paid directly to them. Fee reductions and exemptions may be available.

Yes. Your answers are saved as you go and you can sign back in and pick up where you left off.
Can I change my answers?
Yes. You can go back and change anything before your final documents are produced, and review everything first.
Can I get a refund?
You have 14 days to change your mind, unless you have asked us to start straight away and your documents have already been produced. Full detail is in our terms.
