Yes. If the donor's gross annual income is under £12,000 the £92 fee can be halved. If the donor receives certain means-tested benefits it can be waived entirely. This is assessed on the donor's circumstances, not the person paying.

Do I pay the registration fee to LPAs Online?

No. The registration fee is paid directly to the Office of the Public Guardian when you send your signed documents. It never passes through us.

The Office of the Public Guardian charges £92 to register each LPA, so £184 for both. On top of that you pay whoever prepares the forms: nothing if you complete them yourself on GOV.UK, £49 for one or £79 for both with LPAs Online, or typically £300 to £650 per document through a solicitor.

There are always two costs: registering the LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian, and preparing the paperwork. The first is fixed by the government. The second is where the choice lies.

The registration fee is the same whichever route you take

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) charges £92 to register each Lasting Power of Attorney. Property & Financial Affairs and Health & Welfare are separate documents, so making both costs £184 to register. You pay this directly to the OPG when you post your signed forms — nobody can prepare an LPA that avoids it.

For both documents our fee is £79 rather than £98, so both LPAs come to £263 in total including registration. Solicitor pricing varies widely by firm and region, and many quote a lower price per document when you make both at once — always ask whether the quote includes the OPG fee.

Why pay anything when GOV.UK is free?

The free route is genuinely good, and for a simple LPA with a confident donor it may be all you need. When the registration fee is reduced or waived

The OPG operates a remission and exemption scheme based on the donor's finances, not the finances of whoever fills the form in:

Half fee (remission) — where the donor's gross annual income is below the published threshold, currently £12,000.
No fee (exemption) — where the donor receives certain means-tested benefits, such as Income Support, income-based ESA or Guarantee Pension Credit.

You claim it by sending form LPA120 with the application, along with evidence. We tell you when this looks likely to apply and which form to include.

Costs people forget

Postage to the OPG, ideally tracked — the forms are originals and hard to replace.
Printing. An LP1F runs to around 20 pages and must be printed single-sided.
Certified copies, if banks or care providers want their own copy rather than the online access code.
A capacity assessment by a GP or specialist, if there is any doubt about whether the donor understands the document. This is not part of any preparation service.

The expensive mistake

The real cost risk is not the fee — it is a rejected application. If the OPG returns your LPA because a signature is out of order, a page is missing or an instruction is invalid, you have to correct it, get it signed again by everyone and pay the £92 again.
