Deciding on attorneys before you start

The single question most people pause on is not the form itself but who to appoint. It is worth settling this in advance: see choosing attorneys for an LPA for the traits that matter, who can be an attorney for the eligibility rules, and jointly or jointly and severally for how they will need to act once appointed. Getting this right before you open the form is far quicker than changing course halfway through.

There are no other charges. You pay us once, for preparing the document and the signing guide, and you pay the Office of the Public Guardian separately when you post the signed forms for registration. Reductions to the £92 OPG fee are available for people on a low income — the OPG's own site explains how to apply for that.

Timescales, from starting today to a registered LPA

Choosing your LPA and answering the questions online — typically 30-60 minutes, done today.
Review and payment — a few minutes, once you are happy with the draft.
Arranging signatures with the donor, certificate provider and attorneys — anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how quickly people are available.
Statutory notice period after the donor signs — 4 weeks, fixed by law.
OPG registration once the signed forms are received — typically a further 4-6 weeks.

Deciding between one LPA and both

If you are only going to make one, the Property & Financial Affairs LPA is usually the more urgent, since without it nobody can access accounts or pay bills on the donor's behalf. But making both together at £79 is cheaper and quicker overall than making one now and the other later: adding a second LPA afterwards costs a further £49 on top of what you already paid, plus another £92 OPG fee, and it restarts the four-week notice period from scratch. Can I stop and come back later?

Yes. Once you have created an account your answers are saved automatically, so you can leave the form and return to finish it later.

Do I pay before or after seeing the finished document?

You review the completed LPA before paying, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Is the £92 registration fee included in your price?

No. Our £49 or £79 fee covers preparing the document; the £92 registration fee per LPA is paid separately, directly to the Office of the Public Guardian.

What do I need to hand before I start?

Full names, addresses and dates of birth for the donor and each attorney, and a decision on who will act as certificate provider — see what information do I need for the complete list.

Can the LPA be signed electronically to save time?

No. An LPA must be signed in wet ink, in the correct order, by the donor, the certificate provider and each attorney in turn, with independent witnesses. There is no electronic signing route in England and Wales, whichever provider you use.
