The Office of the Public Guardian charges a separate £92 to register each LPA.
Stage one: complete and sign
You answer the questions, we prepare the document, and you print it. Signing order matters and an out-of-order signature is one of the most common reasons the OPG rejects an application.
- The donor signs section 9, witnessed.
- The certificate provider signs section 10.
- Each attorney and replacement signs section 11, witnessed.
- The applicant signs section 15 to register.
Stage two: register
Send the signed original to the OPG with the fee. There is a statutory four-week waiting period, and current processing typically takes eight to ten weeks in total. An LPA cannot be used until it is registered.

If your application is returned
The OPG will usually explain what is wrong and allow correction and resubmission, but the four-week notice period restarts. This is the single biggest reason to get the signing order right first time — see how long does registration take.

What the OPG actually checks on arrival
- That the correct fee has been included, or a valid fee reduction claim with evidence
- That every required section is signed and dated in the correct order
- That the certificate provider is not disqualified by their relationship to the donor or an attorney
- That any corrections on the form have been properly initialled rather than left ambiguous
None of these checks relate to your choice of attorney or the wisdom of your decisions — the OPG registers the document as instructed provided it is completed correctly. That is exactly the gap a checked online service closes, without pretending to offer legal advice.
A worked example of the full application
Sheila applies for her own LP1F. She answers our questions one evening, reviews the document, and pays £49. Her son signs as certificate provider is not possible since he is her attorney, so she asks a longstanding neighbour instead, confirmed eligible through our checks. Sheila signs first, the neighbour signs next, then her two attorneys sign in turn. She posts the original to the OPG with a cheque for £92. Ten weeks later it arrives back registered.
Common questions
Can I track my application once it is sent?
The OPG does not offer real-time online tracking for paper applications; they will write to you once it is registered or if there is a problem.
Do I apply for both LPAs together or separately?
You can post both LP1F and LP1H together in one envelope, but each is registered as a separate document with its own £92 fee.
What if an attorney lives abroad?
They can still sign and act, but posting the form back and forth adds time — plan the signing order and timing around this.
Can I apply for an LPA on behalf of someone who has lost capacity?
No. The donor must have capacity to make the LPA themselves at the time they sign it. If capacity has already been lost, a deputyship application to the Court of Protection is the relevant route instead.
Do both LP1F and LP1H need their own certificate provider signature?
Yes, each document is signed and certified separately, even if the same certificate provider is used for both and the same person signs on the same day.
