Why most people end up wanting both
A financial LPA is useless when a hospital wants a decision about a discharge to a care home. A health LPA is useless when the mortgage needs paying. Families who make only one usually discover the gap at the worst possible moment — often in a phone call from a ward or a care home manager asking who has authority, and finding the honest answer is nobody.

A worked example: Margaret and her two sons
Margaret, 74, asks her sons Paul and David to be her attorneys. She makes only the financial LPA, thinking the health one can wait. Eighteen months later she has a fall, is admitted to hospital, and the ward wants to discuss a discharge to a care home versus rehabilitation at home. Paul and David have no legal standing in that conversation — the hospital makes the decision in Margaret's best interests, consulting the family informally but not being bound by their view. Had Margaret made both LPAs at the outset, the same £79 fee would have covered it, and Paul and David could have spoken for her formally in that meeting.
What making both together involves
- The people are entered once and carried across both forms.
- You are asked separately how attorneys should act on each document, because the sensible answer often differs.
- The health LPA adds the life-sustaining treatment choice, which only exists on the LP1H.
- You sign both in the same sitting with the same certificate provider and witnesses.
The OPG fee is still per document

The saving on our fee is modest — £19 — but it is not the main reason to do both together. The bigger factor is capacity: it must be present at the time each LPA is made, and doing both now removes the risk of the second one becoming impossible later. Common questions
Can I have different attorneys on each LPA?
Yes. It is common to appoint a financially confident child on the LP1F and a nearby child on the LP1H. We ask separately for each document.
Do both have to be registered at the same time?
No, but there is no reason to stagger them. Sending both together means one wait rather than two.
Is £79 really cheaper than a solicitor for both?
