Your two LPAs explained
Health & Welfare and Property & Financial Affairs are separate documents — here's how they compare and how people decide between them.
£79
For both LPA types prepared together
- Clear fixed price, no hourly charges
- Save and return whenever you like
- Review every answer before anything is final
The Office of the Public Guardian charges a separate £92 to register each LPA. That fee is paid to them, not to us, and is not included above.
The short answer
Health & Welfare (LP1H) covers medical treatment and care; Property & Financial Affairs (LP1F) covers money and property.
They're entirely separate LPAs — neither one gives authority over the other's area.
Many people make both at once; plenty make just one to start with.
Our fee is £49 for one LPA or £79 for both, plus £92 per LPA paid to the OPG to register.
Two different LPAs, one decision to make
This page sets out general information about the two types of Lasting Power of Attorney available in England and Wales — it isn't an account area or a record of any LPAs you've already started. If you're looking for your own saved application, go to how it works or continue your application from where you left off.
Most people considering an LPA reach the same question at some point: do I need one, or both? There's no single right answer — it depends on what you want to cover and who you want covering it.
Health & Welfare vs Property & Financial Affairs
| Health & Welfare (LP1H) | Property & Financial Affairs (LP1F) | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Medical treatment, care arrangements, daily routine, where you live | Bank accounts, bills, property, investments, pensions |
| Form | LP1H | LP1F |
| When it can be used | Only once the donor has lost mental capacity to decide | As soon as it's registered, with the donor's permission (unless restricted) |
| Who typically needs it | Anyone who wants a named person making care and medical decisions rather than relying on next-of-kin assumptions | Anyone with accounts, property or bills who wants continuity if they can't manage them |
| Our fee | £49 (or £79 with LP1F) | £49 (or £79 with LP1H) |
| OPG registration fee | £92 | £92 |
Full detail on each is at health and welfare LPA and property and financial LPA.
The case for making just one
- You have straightforward finances but strong views on care and treatment — a Health and Welfare LPA alone covers that.
- Your accounts and property already have practical arrangements in place (joint accounts, a trusted family member with access), but no one is named for medical decisions.
- Budget is a genuine constraint and you want to prioritise the LPA that matters most to you now, with the option to add the other later.

The case for making both
Many people choose to make both at the same time because the two LPAs cover completely separate areas of life — one doesn't stand in for the other. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA gives no authority over medical decisions, and a Health and Welfare LPA gives no authority over money. Doing both together also means only one round of choosing attorneys, one round of signing arrangements, and a lower combined cost than doing them separately later.
No pressure to choose both
There's no requirement, financial or legal, to make both LPAs. Plenty of people make one and decide against the other, or come back for the second one months or years later.
Couples: up to four LPAs between you
LPAs are personal to each donor — a couple cannot share or jointly hold one LPA. If both partners want full cover, that means up to four separate LPAs: a Property and Financial Affairs LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA for each person. It's common for partners to appoint each other as attorneys, alongside a replacement such as an adult child, but each LPA still has to be prepared and registered individually.
Ordering and what it costs
| Scenario | Our fee | OPG registration fee |
|---|---|---|
| One person, one LPA | £49 | £92 |
| One person, both LPAs | £79 | £184 (£92 × 2) |
| A couple, both LPAs each (4 total) | £158 (£79 × 2) | £368 (£92 × 4) |
Our fee covers preparing and checking the paperwork; the OPG's registration fee is separate and paid directly to them, and some people qualify for a reduced fee or exemption — see LPA cost. When you're ready, create both LPAs in a single session, or start with one and add the other later.

How the process works for both together
- Choose Property and Financial Affairs, Health and Welfare, or both, at the start.
- Answer questions about the donor and attorneys once — many answers carry across both LPAs automatically where they're the same.
- Decide separately, if you want to, who acts as attorney on each LPA and how they act together.
- We check your answers and produce the correctly formatted LP1F and/or LP1H paperwork.
- Sign both sets of forms in the required order, then send them to the OPG with the registration fee for each.
Common questions
Is this page my personal account with my saved LPAs?
No. This is a general information page comparing the two types of LPA. If you're continuing an application you've already started, go to how it works or your dashboard within the application.
Do I have to make both LPAs at the same time?
No. You can make one now and the other later, or make both together — there's no requirement either way.
Why would a couple need four LPAs?
Each partner needs their own Property and Financial Affairs LPA and their own Health and Welfare LPA — LPAs can't be shared or made jointly, so full cover for a couple means four separate documents.
Does making both LPAs cost more than double one?
No, it's cheaper together — £79 for both rather than £49 twice (£98) if bought separately, though the OPG's £92-per-LPA registration fee still applies to each one individually.
Which LPA should I make first if I can only afford one?
That depends on your priorities — many people with straightforward finances but strong views on care choose Health and Welfare first, while others with property or accounts to manage prioritise Property and Financial Affairs.
Can I use the same attorneys for both LPAs?
Yes, you can appoint the same people for both, or choose different attorneys for each — it's entirely your decision.
How long does it take to register both LPAs?
Each LPA is registered separately by the OPG, and both typically take around 8 weeks from a correctly completed application, including the 4-week waiting period.
