How much does a solicitor charge for an LPA?

Commonly £300 to £1,000 per LPA, plus the £92 registration fee. Quotes vary enormously, and what is included varies more.

These are observed market ranges rather than quoted prices; always get the figure in writing from the firm.
Questions to ask before instructing
- Is that per LPA or for both types?
- Is VAT included?
- Does it include acting as certificate provider, and being present at signing?
- Does it include submitting the registration and dealing with OPG queries?
- Are certified copies included, and how many?
Is it worth it?
For contested families, doubtful capacity, business assets or trusts — yes, and we say so plainly. For a person with clear capacity and ordinary UK finances, most of the fee is buying form completion. That is the space our £49 service occupies. Full comparison: solicitor, GOV.UK or online.
Worked example
Margaret, 71, owns her home outright, has a modest private pension and no business interests. Her local solicitor quotes £650 plus VAT for both LPAs, which includes the solicitor acting as certificate provider and holding a copy on file. Her son David, who is comfortable with paperwork, instead uses our £79 service for both LPAs, asks a neighbour who has known Margaret for years to act as certificate provider, and pays the OPG's £184 registration fee directly. Total cost: £263 rather than roughly £964, for a document that is legally identical once registered. If Margaret instead ran a small business with a co-director, or her children disagreed about her care, the solicitor's judgement and file note could matter far more than the price difference.
What drives the price up
- A home visit rather than an office appointment.
- The solicitor acting as certificate provider and as an attorney.
- Advice alongside the LPA, such as will reviews or trust planning.
- London and South East firms tend to charge more than regional ones for the same document.
Get it in writing
Ask for a fixed fee in writing before instructing, covering exactly which documents, whose signature and how many certified copies are included. Verbal estimates have a habit of growing.
Regional and firm-by-firm variation
Two solicitors on the same high street can quote very different figures for the same pair of documents, because pricing for LPAs is not regulated in the way conveyancing search fees or probate court fees are. A firm with a dedicated private client team handling large volumes of LPAs often prices more competitively than a general practice doing them occasionally as a favour to existing clients. It is worth getting two or three quotes rather than assuming the first one you receive reflects the market.
Some firms also offer a package price covering a will, an LPA and a review of your existing estate planning together. This can represent genuine value if you need all three, but check the LPA element is not simply a nominal £1 add-on used to make the overall bundle look attractive while the will fee absorbs most of the cost.
A middle path
Some people use a solicitor for advice on tricky points — for example whether to include a specific instruction about care preferences — and then complete the LPA itself through GOV.UK or an online service. This can combine the reassurance of professional input with a lower overall bill, though it only works if the solicitor is happy to advise without insisting on handling the whole document.
Common questions
Are cheap 'will writer' LPAs the same as solicitors?
No. Will writers are not necessarily regulated, so check what protection you actually get before paying solicitor-level prices.
Do solicitors get LPAs registered faster?
No. The OPG's statutory waiting period and processing time apply to everyone equally.
Is the £92 OPG fee included in a solicitor's quote?
Sometimes, but often not. Always ask whether the quoted figure is the solicitor's fee alone, or the total including the government's registration fee.
Can I use a solicitor for one LPA and do the other myself?
Yes. There is no requirement to use the same route for both documents, though it can be simpler to keep the certificate provider and paperwork consistent.
